How To Prevent Stress -- A Funny True Story

Considering the fact that this is coming from a guy who writes about how to prevent stress and manage anxiety symptoms, I suspect that this ironic little story will strike your funny bone. Let me tell you about a day I had recently -- there is a lesson to be learned here.

Did you ever have one of those days when you just did not want to get out of bed? I had been up until 3:30 the night before; and no, I was not up partying all night (alas, my party days are but a distant memory now). As happens sometimes, I was doing some research for a project I was working on and the clock got away from me.

As I lay there in bed dreading the thought of actually moving, I ran through the list of things that I had to get done: work on the website, straighten out some issues regarding a couple of business deals that were giving me problems, write TWO articles, write AND practice a speech for a presentation I had to give in a few days, and to somehow squeeze in time to get to the gym . . . Needless to say, I was feeling overwhelmed before I even set foot out of bed -- which is not a great way to start the day!

As my day progressed, the symptoms of stress and anxiety reared their ugly head. I yelled at my dog. I cursed the telephone as it tumbled to the floor and out of my reach behind the desk. I was feeling tired, anxious, frustrated, and generally cranky and by 9 o'clock that evening I was exhausted and I did not want to do another single thing, but I still had one article left to write.

I procrastinated. I looked at the computer screen. I checked email. I yelled at my dog again (poor fella, he's such a good boy and he didn't deserve it). I leaned back and stared at the ceiling when a notion struck me. Like a diamond bullet going a thousand miles an hour it struck me right in the center of my forehead. I started to laugh. I laughed hard and I laughed loud. My dog came over to see what the commotion was all about and I gave him a good belly rub that escalated into a five minute session of "where is the tennis ball hiding?"

I collapsed on the living room floor with a big smile on my face and I proceeded to stretch out my muscles and practice deep breathing exercise. By 9:30 I was feeling completely refreshed and in a fantastic mood! By 10:10 the article was finished and submitted. I watched a little TV and was in bed by 11 o'clock. It was a good night.

So, what is the moral of the story? The moral is that there really are simple tips and techniques for how to prevent stress that actually work! Stress management need not be complicated. Whenever you are feeling stressed, tense, overworked and anxious, try taking a break, having a good laugh, stretching out your muscles and breathing deeply for a few minutes.

Of all people, I should have known better. Had I practiced what I preach and taken a few breaks during the day a lot of aggravation could have been avoided. By the way, do you want to know the topic of the article that was driving me to distraction? You guessed it -- it was about how to prevent stress!

Research suggests that eating breakfast early in the day may reduce the risk of weight gain and perhaps heart disease and diabetes.

Avoid fats and carbs from items like sugar, potatoes, and white bread. Choose foods that are heart-healthy and include fruits, whole-grain cereals, bread, reduced-fat cheese, and low fat or skim milk.

Beat the Sugar High

For those that have a sweet tooth, staying away from sugar is a constant struggle. On one hand it is just so much easier and faster to grab that doughnut on the way to the office! On the other hand, sugar becomes like an addiction that is very hard to break.

If you happen to like sugar a little more than you should and you need that sugar fix each day, an enormous way to get control and to curb the sugar craving is by using a natural substance called 5-HTP. You can find it in most any natural health food store. (5-hydroxytryptophan)

There are no magic pill for weight loss, but if appetite, and not willpower, is your downfall, then 5-HTP may do the trick.

5-HTP is a direct precursor to "serotonin". It causes feelings of fullness and eliminates cravings for carbohydrates and balances the serotonin levels in your brain. This safe, effective herbal compound can also lift your spirits, which makes it great for mood swings, anxiety and depression. The recommended dosage is 50-100 mgs per day.

Rotate Your Exercise Routine

Varying your exercise routine can help slow down the aging process. By changing routines you avoid boredom, and most importantly the danger of injury caused by overusing a particular muscle, bone, or joint.

Try rotating between aerobic exercises such as walking, dancing, jogging, swimming, cycling, and skating.

Add strength training exercises a couple of times a week and gently stretch your muscles at least two or three times a week to help prevent weakness, stiffness, bone loss, and falls.

Take Charge!

Taking charge of your own medical history and lifestyle is your right! You don't have to become Dr. Know-it-all, but researching specific areas of health that pertain to your own conditions is a smart move.

Researching the natural remedies in addition to what your doctor advises giving you more choices, as well as natural healing options. Getting a second opinion from additional health care professionals is important as well.

You have the right to all your medical records and eyeglass or contact lens prescriptions. You are entitled to all copies of lab results, immunization records, and imaging studies. Keep them filed at home in an organized manner. Keep a record of up-to-date medications and doses for your files as well as carrying this list with you at all times.

By feeding your body and mind the best foods and nutrients possible not only will you have more energy, your body will be stronger and your mind sharper. The tips in this report are the first steps on the route toward a healthier life.

Healthy Tips : Fish oil Benefits

Have you wondered why fish oil is highly recommended for a healthy diet? Fish oil is rich in Omega 3 fatty acids--eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). These acids have been proven to reduce inflammation in the body.

The fish from which the omega 3 fatty acids are extracted do not actually produce these acids. They acquire and accumulate the omega 3 fatty acids in their body by consuming microalgae that contain these acids. Herrings and sardines are predatory fish that are also a rich source of omega 3 fatty acids. The Herrings and Sardines eat other fish which have accumulated omega 3 fatty acids by eating microalgae. However, mackerel, lake trout, albacore tuna and salmon which are predatory fishes at the top of the food chain are not recommended for consumption in large quantities by the FDA as they accumulate toxins in addition to the omega 3 from their food.

In this context fish oil is gaining importance. The omega 3 acid extracted from the predatory fish is purified and the toxins removed before the product is marketed. The process of purification is patented in a process called stripping technology. Most of the fish oils that are used as food supplements are manufactured in Peru, Chile and Morocco where there is a rich source of fish. The biggest names in this product market are companies like Ewos, Skretting and Biomar.

The fish oil is extracted from the body of the fish and the liver is not used. The liver is rich in Vitamin A and can be dangerous to the human body in large quantities.

Fish oil is believed to regulate cholesterol. Research also has proved that the oil has anti inflammatory properties. Studies have indicated that levels of omega 3 impact upon the psychology of people too. People who consumed Fish oil were less violent than those who did not consume fish oil or products that were rich in omega 3. The American heart association strongly recommends a daily dose of fish oil for people with coronary disease. The US National Institutes of health encourage patients with hypertrigyceridemia, secondary cardiovascular disease and high blood pressure to consume fish oil as essential for health. Fish oil has also been found to protect the brain against cognitive disorders. However, large doses of fish oil have been found to increase bleeding and hemorrhagic stroke.

While fish oil is a wonderful health supplement, it is important to consult your physician before you include it in your diet if you are suffering from any diseases for which you are under treatment.

10 Tips to Reduce Stress at Work

Too much stress can have a negative impact on your well-being. Stress can not only cause anxiety and depression, but can also have a negative impact on your health. Most people have filled days with little time to spare. Bad and unforeseeable things come up here and there, and the To-Do list keeps on getting longer and longer with no perspective of seeing light at the end of the tunnel. Learning how to cope with all this will be the deciding factor on your stress level.

Whether it is your boss that causes you stress or you simply have too much to do, keeping a positive outlook on things is the number one key to manage your stress effectively. Below are 10 simple tricks that will help you create a positive environment. It will help reduce stress, make you more efficient, and overall a happier person at work and in your personal time.

1. Be Well-rested

Getting enough sleep is crucial. Many people watch TV until late at night and then are surprised that they have difficulty falling asleep. As relaxing it may seem to you, watching TV causes your mind to keep running. Instead get some rest not just physically but also emotionally. Listening to calm music and drinking bed time tea are two great alternatives to watching TV and eating popcorn. If this still doesn't help you get a better night of sleep, pay closer attention to what you are eating at what time. It is advisable not to eat any later than 4 hours before you plan on going to bed. Having too much food in your stomach close before bed-time will make it much more difficult for your body to find rest.

2. Get up With Enough Time

Start the day on a positive note! Avoid cutting your time too short in the morning. Starting your day off stressed on time will leave a negative impression in your head that will carry on throughout the day. Instead get up with enough time to shower, to get dressed, and to eat a little bit of breakfast.

3. Eat Breakfast

Eating a balanced breakfast will fuel your body with viable nutrients and sustainable energy. Avoid eating on the run, but instead take a few minutes to sit down. Stay away from breakfasts with too much simple sugars and simple crabs as they will cause a quick spike in energy at first with a crash shortly after that leaves you off more lethargic than before you ate. A few slices of whole-wheat toast with some lean ham and an egg or two are a great way to start the day.

4. Dress Right

Make sure that you keep your wardrobe somewhat organized. Finding your work clothes easily will make it much easier to get ready in the morning. Pay attention to the colors you are wearing. If a suit and tie is part of your business attire, use "positive colors" such as blue and green. Especially blue is said to have a calming effect on people including yourself. A blue suit and/or dress shirt are great. If you like to wear more color, then do this in your smaller pieces of clothing such as your neckties. A light green necktie will give your outfit a fresh and positive look that will carry over to your attitude.

5. Beat Traffic

Know what time to leave and what route to take to work to beat rush hour. Spending an hour in stop and go traffic will cause your unnecessary stress. Also consider other forms of transportation or car-polling with close by living co-workers.

6. Organize Your Work-space

When you leave work, make sure to clean up your desk. You will be glad the next day! Starting your day on a clean and well organized desk is an important part on reducing stress at the office. In addition, having a clean desk will have a positive projection on co-workers and superiors. It shows that you are a well-organized person that pays attention to detail.

7. Plants

Bring more life into your workspace with plants. Weather you prefer the look of cut bamboo on your desk, or a larger plant in the corner is personal preference. Research has shown that plants will help in creating a positive and friendly environment that has a more soothing effect on people.

8. Pictures Give your workspace a familiar face by bringing in a few pictures of people or things that are important to you. Having a picture of your wife and kids on your desk will help reduce stress.

9. Be Productive Make a To-Do list at the beginning of each day. Prioritize each item based on importance and timeliness. Also estimate how long it will take to complete each task. Not only will this help you create an achievable goal for the day, but is will also help to track progress using time as a measure.

10. Communicate

Is your boss causing you stress? Keeping good communication will help! If your boss is not doing his/her part, take the initiative and open up the communication. Communication will help you know what is expected of you, as well as it is important for your boss to know what he/she can expect.

If you follow the tips above you will have done a great step in managing your stress. No matter what you do, keep a positive attitude and have confidence in your abilities.

Facial Skin Care Tips

Caring for your skin and caring for your body go hand in hand. Your skin is like a mirror that reflects all your habits. If you eat healthy and treat your body well, the result will be healthier more supple skin. However, if you eat foods that are greasy and bad for you, it will show through your skin in the form of pimples and blemishes. Because your skin releases toxins from your body many of the things you eat indirectly affect your skin.

One of the most important facial skin care tips is to maintain a healthy eating habit. By creating and sticking to a healthy diet, you will not only feel the benefits of it, but you will also see the benefits through a more lean body and most importantly you will notice it by the texture and complexion of your skin. Drinking a lot of water and eating healthy are important facial skin care tips that will not result in immediate improvement, but it will also be noticed as the years pass.

Aside from a good diet, cleansing and moisturizing are important facial skin care tips. Eating healthy helps maintain the health and look of your skin from the inside out, but that alone will not necessarily cure any skin problems that you may have. Basic Tips for Proper Contact Lens Care

Contact lenses have been proven to be a safe and efficient means of vision correction, but even still, it is crucial that contact lens wearers follow the instructions of their eye care practitioner in order to optimize their eye health. Properly caring for and maintaining contact lenses is a key component of eye care and the prevention of eye infections and other problems.

Multipurpose solutions simplify caring for contact lenses by combining three steps – cleaning, rinsing, and disinfecting. Some people may find it preferable to further clean their lenses by rubbing them. To do this, apply three drops of multipurpose solution to the lens and rub from the center outward, but not in a circular motion. This action wipes away any dirt or debris from the lens surface. After rubbing the lens, rinse the lens with more solution and return it to its case and fill the case with fresh solution.

Be sure not to top off solution; use fresh solution each time you clean and disinfect your lenses. Also, don’t touch the tip of the solution bottle to your hands or the lens, and tightly recap the bottle after each use.

Don’t wear contact lenses when swimming in a pool or hot tub. Some scientists have found that this contact with water can allow bacteria to gain access to the contact lenses and the eyes.

The most important aspect of contact lens maintenance is hand washing. One’s hands come into contact with numerous germs every day; it is therefore essential that wearers thoroughly wash their hands before handling their lenses. If hands are not properly washed before handling contact lenses, wearers run the risk of contaminating their lenses and their eyes. Cream soaps are less desirable, as they tend to leave a film on the hands, which can then be transferred to the lenses, causing temporary decreased visual comfort.

It is also very important that lenses be regularly disinfected with the appropriate solution as recommended by your eye care practitioner. Each time that lenses are cleaned, fresh solution should be used. Follow the solution instructions carefully, as some brands require different steps.

To ensure that makeup products such as mascara or cover up do not get stuck on the surface of a contact lens, it is important to insert contacts before applying makeup. Also, use oil-free moisturizers and don’t apply hand lotions or creams before handling lenses in order to minimize the risk of oily deposits on the lens surface.

Contact lenses should be properly stored in a case that is regularly cleaned. Storage cases should be cleaned with the recommended disinfectant solution, not tap water, in order to kill any microorganisms that could be on your lenses. This should prevent the risk of eye infection. Leave the cover off the case and allow it to dry before putting lenses back in it.

Steer clear of putting contact lenses in your mouth or using saliva to moisten lenses. Saliva contains a robust bacteria flora, which is foreign to your eyes and could lead to a variety of eye infections.

Visit your eye care practitioner regularly and follow a replacement contact lens schedule that you and your practitioner agree upon.

5 Tips for Healthy Living

Feel like you don’t have as much energy as you used to? Stressed out about things that happen both at work and in your personal life? Want to lose the five extra pounds that have taken up residence on your hips? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you may need a lesson in healthy living.

The average person spends two thirds of their life either at work, working at home or thinking about work. The majority of the remaining time is spent sleeping. So what can you do in your waking hours to make sure you’re living the healthiest lifestyle possible? We have the answers:

1. Eliminate Stress.

Eliminating undue stress can be one of the hardest things to accomplish in your daily routine. On the other hand, it also has the biggest impact on your life. Ever heard the saying ‘don’t sweat the small stuff’? It’s time to put those words into action. And if you still can’t beat the blues, try lighting some candles and taking a bath, planning a day at the health spa, working out or reading a book. These are all known to be effective measures in relieving stress.

2. Quit Smoking.

If you’ve taken up the not-so-flattering (not to mention, unhealthy) habit of smoking, we strongly urge you to try quitting. And while we realize that doing so may up your stress levels for a short period of time, the long term effects on your health will be worth it in the end.

3. Eat Healthy.

Maintaining a healthy, balanced diet will work wonders for your health and will improve your overall energy. Eating green vegetables, fruit and the appropriate portions of meat and dairy combined with drinking lots of water and milk (to strengthen bones) will not only help you lose those extra pounds but will make you feel like a million bucks as well.

4. Exercise.

Working out on a consistent basis will also make you look and feel better. Exercising (whether it’s at a gym or in your home) will increase energy, relieve stress and leave you looking damn good. Who’s going to say no to that?

5. Stay Informed.

Health education is a great way to learn about new ways to stay healthy. Watching health channels on television (preferably while running on a treadmill) or reading a health magazine (you know, to relieve some stress) will help make sure you know what’s going on in the industry. Now that you know the plan, it’s time to put it in action. Good luck – and stay healthy!

Healthy Tips : Teeth Whitening - The Facts

Teeth whitening can be a great way to improve the look of your smile.

Nearly anyone that wants to brighten their teeth or smile can benefit from teeth whitening products. Some reasons you may want to get your teeth whitened may be due to your age, staining, or smoking. These factors all make you an excellent candidate for teeth whitening. Studies indicate that the teeth whitening process is effective in more than 80% of patients. Teeth whitening is now becoming more popular than ever, and research to better the teeth whitening system follows close behind.

Teeth whitening is a non-permanent procedure that works by removing harmful organic materials in the tooth enamel. The bleaching compound, which is a peroxide derivative, works by dissolving the organic materials in the enamel. For this reason, teeth whitening is more effective if there is an ample supply of enamel.

Today, there are 2 basic types of teeth whitening procedures: those done at the home via whitening kits, and those at a dentist's office by specialists.

Teeth Whitening Home Kits

Teeth whitening kits provide an affordable alternative to professional teeth whitening. Generally, the kits contain a brand-name whitening gel that is applied in a provided mouthpiece. The mouthpiece is then fit over the teeth and left on for various amounts of time. The cost of these kits can vary greatly, as a quality one can be several hundred dollars, while a cheaper kit will only cost you around 30 dollars. Obviously a quality kit will be more effective due to the better ingredients used in the gels.

To be sure you get a quality kit, look for the ADA seal of approval on the box (American Dental Association). Following the manufacturer's directions in the box is very important when using a home kit. Also, be sure to consult with a dentist if you plan to use a whitening kit for long periods of time. The bleaching compounds can cause severe teeth sensitivity that can have long term effects.

Professional Teeth Whitening

A professional teeth whitening treatment is the more expensive of the 2 options, however it is the safest and is generally more effective. A dental specialist will first determine if you are a good candidate for teeth whitening, then decide which type of whitening system would best fit your situation. Once determined as a candidate, the dental specialist will remove any general debris and plaque in the teeth that may hamper the whitening process. If you have cavities or gum disease, this will need to be taken care of prior to treatment.

Generally, the professional method is the preferred choice of most, as positive results are more common. Be sure to consult with your dentist to see if you are a candidate for teeth whitening, as it is instant and generally hassle free.

Are There Disadvantages or Limitations to Teeth Whitening?

As with any cosmetic treatments, there are bound to be a few side effects that can occur. Sore gums, sore teeth, and hyper-sensitivity can be caused by the whitening bleach. Also, don't expect your bridges, crowns, or fillings to brighten. The teeth whitening material is only effective for tooth enamel. Therefore, it is very important that you consult with a dentist before trying a whitening product, especially home kits.

You may also find yourself disappointed with the results. Everyone is different; therefore no procedure will have the same results. If you are unsatisfied with your teeth after a whitening procedure, you should consult with your dentist if further treatments will help or not.

Because teeth whitening has become so popular and effective, research continues to improve all teeth whitening systems.

Healthy Tips : Stress and Herbs; the alternative treatment

Today with the unstable economy and super high levels of debt, stress is increasing at an alarming rate. For the purpose of this article I will be concentrating on negative stress. Meaning: When a person finds oneself in a stress situation, the body reacts with a "fight-or-flight" response, releasing adrenaline and the stress hormone cortisol. This results is a fast reaction in an emergency (positive reaction), but if this condition persists for too long, these chemicals become harmful to the system and wreak physical havoc to the health (negative reaction) - everything from a compromised immune system, to heart problems, depression, concentration problems to insomnia could result.

Causes of stress

The causes of stress are highly individual. Your personality, ability to solve and defuse problems, support systems etc. will determine the stressfulness of a situation.

Debt is one of today’s most prevalent causes for stress, also factors like: death, major health problems, divorce, loss of job etc. contribute to chronic stress.

Effects of Stress

When stress is persistent, the body experiences stress plus the toxic effect of continued high stress hormones. Some irreversible brain and organ damage could be caused by these substances. Symptoms of chronic stress are:

• Chronic head ache (migraines, lower back pain, stiffness)

• Mood swings (depression, short temper, irritability, impatience, overreacting to problems)

• Nervous habits (e.g. nail biting, pacing)

• Anxiety (negative attitude, anxious or racing thoughts, fearfulness)

• Substance abuse (alcohol, cigarettes, or drugs, overdoing activities e.g. exercising, shopping)

• Memory disturbances (inability to concentrate, indecisiveness, poor judgement, difficulty studying)

• Depression (general unhappiness, feeling overwhelmed, sense of loneliness, procrastination)

• Agitation (restlessness, feeling tense, edgy)

• Behavioural problems (isolating oneself from others)

• Increased blood pressure, sugar and cholesterol

• Weight loss (or gain, Thymus gland malfunctioning, blood sugar fluctuations)

• Allergies (e.g. asthma)

• Digestive tract problems (diarrhoea, constipation, nausea, irritable bowl)

• Decreased sexual drive (decreased levels of testosterone)

• Sleeping disorders (sleeping too much or too little, teeth grinding, jaw clenching)

• Skin breakouts (hives, eczema)

• Frequent colds

If you’re experiencing any of these warning symptoms, it’s important to see a doctor for a full evaluation. Once your doctor has determined whether or not your symptoms are stress-related, consider Herbs and Vitamin B as an alternative aid to stress relief.

Herbal stress treatment:

Herbs are used in stress management therapy with little or no side effects.

Please note: In the case of pregnancy always consult your doctor before using any medication, even herbs.

Herbs can be taken in the following ways. Prepared in tablet or liquid form, commercial herbal teas from health shops and Supermarkets or freshly made into an infusion (tea).

I must add here that it is important to take Vitamin B complex as part of stress treatment, as it combines with Herbs (folic acid) to reduce stress. The following different herbs have medicinal values in the treatment of stress.
